The Aims of the Department
The central aim of the department can be stated thus: • to foster and develop the full potential of every pupil Further to this, and in support of it, are the following aims: • to develop a pupil’s confidence in his or her ability to understand and respond to mathematics • to develop a pupil’s imagination and questioning of the subject • to develop pupil’s self-motivation • to develop a pupil’s appreciation of mathematics as a subject of intrinsic power and beauty as well as one of fundamental use and value • to develop a pupil’s appreciation of the subject’s historical and cultural background
The Objectives of the Department
In order to achieve the more general aims of the department, the following objectives can be stated. 1. Develop sound numeracy skills, including mental arithmetic. 2. Understand the use of mathematical symbols, language and structure. 3. Competently use mathematical instruments, including calculators and computers. 4. Estimate and approximate to a required degree of accuracy. 5. Deal with spatial relationships in two and three dimensions. 6. Understand and present information clearly and concisely in a variety of forms – in words, numbers, diagrams, tables, graphs etc. and generally handle data effectively. 7. Hypothesise, generalise, reason logically and review critically when solving problems. 8. Work independently and cooperatively as required. 9. Show initiative, imagination, flexibility, adaptability and perseverance. 10. Develop a positive attitude to the subject.
To help achieve these objectives it is important to develop a sense of cooperation and respect in the classroom. The support that is provided by a teacher with an imaginative and creative approach working through a carefully planned program of study in a stimulating and organised environment is of paramount importance.
