The general aims and objectives of the Physical Education department involve a number of inter-correlated aspects which fit broadly into the headings outlined below.
Physical To assist every student to reach and understand the need for optimum physical development. To help students achieve ‘psychomotor competence’, that has become ‘literate’ in a movement sense, developing motor skills and body awareness. To stress to the students the need and importance of personal hygiene – cleanliness of the body, clothes and habits.
Aesthetic/Creative To introduce an appreciation and involvement of the art and beauty of human movement, with the emphasis on meaningful movement and individual expression. To strive for excellence and quality in all work.
Social To enable the students to experience enjoyment from a wide variety of physical activities and to foster the desire to participate in some form of sport once students leave school. To give the students the opportunity to develop positive attitudes and share the values of sport both as participants and spectators. To offer the students the opportunity of meeting and working with each other in a rule governed “play” situation and encouraging leadership qualities.
Scientific To develop the students’ awareness of the relationship between health and fitness so they become “exercise conscious” and understand the need for active lifestyles. To give students a basic understanding of the biomechanical principles which underline performance and technique.
Emotional To provide an opportunity to relieve the tensions and stresses inherent to everyday life. To encourage students to meet challenging and enjoyable physical experiences which bring about a sense of achievement and self-esteem whatever their level of performance.
Ethical To give the students through a rule governed situation a sense of what is acceptable as “fair play”. To develop tolerant attitude and respect for others’ feelings, views and capabilities.
Leadership/officiating To give students the opportunity to experience a range of sporting roles.
