Special Educational Needs
Student Services aim to promote the educational, social and emotional development of students with special needs through supporting areas of the school community in implementing the school policy for Special Educational Needs and Inclusion. This will be achieved by providing a flexible and responsive network of support. The school’s SENCO oversees the implantation of these policies. Most students with special educational needs are identified at the start of their schooling at Walton High School either through liaison with primary schools or by the screening procedures in place in Year 7. Students in Key Stage 3 who have difficulties with literacy and Numeracy skills have access to Successmaker which is an integrated computer programme in literacy and Numeracy.
The school currently has a three stage model of intervention inline with recommendations by DFES, School Action where school provide all the necessary support for students, School Action Plus and for those students who continue to make slower progress than expected the school may request a formal assessment by the Local Education Authority for a statement of special educational needs.
School Action support for students involves Assessments, Individual Educational Plans, Essential Skills Tuition with a qualified Dyslexia Tutor, In-class Support by a team of skilled Curriculum Support Assistants, Counselling, Parental Support, Emotional Behavioural and Social support through the Head of Student Services, Peer Support through the active Buddying System, Volunteer Mentor and Classroom Volunteer support.
For School Action Plus the department has access to off site professionals to support the students’ individual needs, this includes support from an Educational Psychologist, teachers from the Special Educational Needs Support Service, a physiotherapist and a speech and language therapist. Connexions provides invaluable support for students at points of transition at 14 and 16.
Governors at the school receive regular reports on the number of students of the special educational needs registers and the progress they are making.
