ICT Department Curriculum & Courses
KS4 - Applied ICT Students can opt to take a double GCSE in Applied ICT. This is timetabled for four 50 minute periods a week. Unit 1 Tools and Applications Students develop their skills in the use of: Word Processing Desktop Publishing Spreadsheets Databases including relation al databases Multimedia presentation. This unit is assessed by a practical examination set by the Exam Board. Unit 2 - ICT systems and Organisations Students investigate how ICT components and systems meet the needs of organisations. They look at the use of ICT in a local firm. They gain practical experience of how ICT systems are designed and implemented by producing an Access database of their own. Unit 3 ICT in Society Students learn how ICT affects everyday life and society. They investigate the impact of ICT on themselves, an adult in employment, a person with a special need and their local community. Key Skills Students who do not opt for the Applied ICT undertake the Key Skills Level 2 ICT qualification. This course is for one 50 minutes lesson through the Key Stage. They have to produce 2 pieces of coursework and sit a short multi-choice examination. Coursework 1 Students carry out market research to look at the feasibility of organising a y11 leavers ball. They present their findings in a formal report. They use spreadsheet software to work out the costing arrangements and come up with a ticket price for the ball. Coursework 2 Under development
AS/A2 Information & Communication Technology To obtain an in ICT at A Level pupils are required to study over a period of two years in total: Year 1 (AS Level) and Year 2 (A2 Level). Students are taught for a total of 6 periods a week at each level and are expected to supplement the work done in lessons with a significant amount of independent study. The course outline is as follows: IN YEAR 1 (AS Level) Assessment weighting: 40% Coursework 60% theory Two theory modules (ICT 1 & ICT 2) plus a practical spreadsheet based module (ICT 3) lead to an AS level award in the subject: ICT 1: Theory, Information: Nature, Role & Context. ICT 2: Information: Management & Information. ICT 3: Coursework, a spreadsheet project. IN YEAR 2: (A2 Level) Assessment weighting: 40% Coursework 60% theory Two theory modules (ICT 4 & ICT 5) and a practical database module (ICT 6) add to the AS for an A2 award. The skills students develop in ICT will prove useful in their other subjects. In the work place the ability to analyse complex information systems and develop more efficient proposals is increasingly becoming a very much sought after skill: ICT 4: Information: Systems within Organisations. ICT 5: Information: Policies, Strategies & Systems. ICT 6: Coursework, a relational database project for a real end user.
