Curriculum - MFL - Departmental Information - Homework Policies

MFL Department Homework Policy

Homework provides valuable consolidation and extension to work undertaken in class and is an integral part of independent learning. The department sets homework in line with school policy.  Homework is drawn from the Year 7-9 schemes of work and reinforces the Key Stage 3 strategy and FCSE. At Key Stage 4 homework will relate to the GCSE specifications.

Each student should spend approximately 20-30 minutes per homework at Key Stage 3.

In Key Stage 4, this should be 30-45 minutes, and will include one learning or preparation piece and one written piece per week

Homework may take various forms, for example:

* learning spellings
* practising reading aloud
* practising speaking aloud
* teaching some phrases to someone at home
* explaining a grammar point to someone at home
* drawing sketches to support a vocabulary or phrase list
* reading a specific text
* revising a set list of vocabulary
* completing a reading comprehension exercise
* completing a writing exercise eg gapfill or word/sentence ordering
* completing a puzzle or crossword
* completing corrections of previously marked work
* redrafting corrected work
* research
* language exercises via the internet

If a student fails to produce homework- he/she will be allowed to bring it the following day but a mark will be put against his/her name in the register. The student should note the reminder in the homework diary.
If the student fails to bring it in, he/she will have an automatic detention on the next occasion staff see them (next lesson). This also means a second mark in the register.

If any student attends a detention twice for non-completion of homework, then a letter will be sent home.   The next step will be a homework report and this is clearly stated in the letter to parents.

Key Stage 5

Students will receive homework after every lesson. In addition to the aforementioned homework, students are expected to complete 5 hours per week of independent learning. We recommend that this is broken down into:
1 hour listening practice, 1 hour grammar practice, 1 hour reading, 1 hour reviewing notes, 1 hour speaking ( half completed in school with French/ German assistant).

Students will be allowed to hand in one piece of work late. After that, names will be passed onto HoD/ Sixth-form heads/tutors and parents will be notified.
